Spartan CHOICES: Healthy Choices, Winning Future
At Manchester University, we understand the challenges and decisions that our students and student-athletes alike are faced with on a daily basis. Each year, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) provides thousands of dollars to college campuses to promote education and leadership programs aimed at students and student-athletes. As a part of these programs, the NCAA sponsors CHOICES grants, which provide campuses with the opportunity to create educational campaigns and offer late night programming in a safe and drug-free atmosphere. Programs are targeted to the larger student body rather than to student-athletes in particular. In addition, CHOICES programs aim to increase collaboration between campus athletics departments and other campus organizations involved in overall wellness campaigns.
At Manchester, our Spartan CHOICES program will address each of these three levels specifically:
- Level 1: Provide education and awareness about healthy choices and life balance. This information will be especially targeted at first-year students using peer educators, but also available for all MU Students on university web pages.
- Level 2: Provide more alcohol-free programming opportunities for athletes and all interested students by extending the hours of existing university athletic facilities and offering incentives to support university athletic events. Use peer educators to disseminate COMPASS messages to students groups as well as social marketing to influence campus attitudes towards drinking.
- Level 3: Develop materials to educate 21-year-old students who move off campus into community housing about responsible behaviors and responsible community participation.
