Meet the Director, Dr. Tamara O'Hearn

Dr. Tamara O'Hearn is an experienced teacher, writing program administrator and writing coach who specializes in helping individuals become better writers and stronger thinkers by diagnosing existing learning difficulties, psychological barriers and environmental obstacles to writing and learning processes. She has worked with students from elementary age, to graduate students undergoing the dissertation writing process, and with various groups of students including those from under-represented neighborhoods, ESL students and special needs students. She believes that every student has the ability to succeed and can learn essential skills to help them complete their academic journey and meet their desired goals.

Tamara previously worked with writing programs at James Madison University, Ball State University and Indiana University and has 20 years experience in college teaching and administration. She has been an assistant professor at both Ball State University and Indiana University working specifically for the Advanced College Project. She was the assistant director of the writing program at Ball State University as well as the English placement advisor for general studies advising. As a faculty administrator, Tamara chaired committees for compensation, diversity training, faculty representation and curriculum review.

Tamara has worked with inner-city children in Indianapolis, first accessing their intellectual and social needs and then creating summer workshops to improve their existing skills. Many of these former IPS students have been placed on scholarships in private schools throughout Indianapolis and are now planning for college. She has also worked in Mexico as a missionary, building a local commmunity center and teaching children and adults to read. She continues to educate others on the Invisible Children Project in Africa.
