Homecoming football game, October 19, 1940
Manchester 7 - Ball State 6

In this slow-motion excerpt, Jimmie Phend scored to give Ball State (in white jerseys with shoulder stripes) a 6-0 lead.  Manchester (in their all-gold) rallied in the 4th quarter.   McClintic, Wood (#33), and Summe (#40) tackled Phend on a 4th-down punt attempt to give the Spartans the ball on Ball State’s 21 yard line.  From there, running a muscular single-wing, backs Lew Cameron (#15), Bill Milliner (#32), and Bob Brandon (#53) alternated carries.  Brandon scored on a sweep to the left corner, where he was met by part of the standing-room only crowd of 4,000.  He then kicked the winning extra-point.  Some other identifiable players are Phil Domer (35), Glenn Kistler (30), Everett Huth (63).

Coached by Carl Burt, the Spartans finished the 1940 season with a record of 5-2-1.  Their 4-0 Indiana Collegiate Conference record tied for first place with Butler.  Besides Ball State, wins came over Hanover, Valparaiso, Central Normal, and Defiance.  They lost to Western Michigan and Wooster, and tied Georgetown (KY).
