Manchester University Archives and Brethren Historical Collection

Usage Policy

The Archives and Brethren Historical Collection welcomes and encourages the use of its materials. Anyone is free to use the collection, regardless of affiliation with Manchester University or the Church of the Brethren. Persons wishing to access the Archives are asked to observe the following guidelines:

1. Do not bring food or drink into the Archives.

2. Use only pencil, never pen, for taking notes. This insures that the materials will not be accidentally marked with ink.

3. Be prepared to wear gloves (provided) when looking at photographs, books and documents.

4. If scans, photocopies, or other reproductions of materials are needed, please make arrangements through the university archivist. The staff reserves the right to refuse to copy or permit the copying of materials which may be damaged by production processes.

5. Obtain permission from the archivist before using cameras or digital devices.

6. Materials may be used anywhere in the building for as long as necessary, during normal library hours; however, they may not be removed from the library building.

7. Preserve the order of papers within boxes and folders.

8. Materials should be returned to the Archives or to the circulation desk.

9. In accordance with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974/1976 (FERPA), materials that are considered part of a student's academic record are closed.

10. Researchers are responsible for determining copyright status of archived materials where this is relevant to their intended use of the materials.
