This one from the Gola country was told by Elder Gandama of Wuedekoa, ear Yangaya. The leading characters of many Gola folk tales are animals. | | Date of Accession | 31 October 2008 | | Bio History Note | Donald E. Kessler was a 1946 Manchester College graduate. He and his wife, Olive, spent many years in Liberia. In 1994 they made an inquiry to the College regarding their Liberian artifact collection. Would the College like to have it? After discussion, the College decided that the materials would extend Manchester's West African art collection.
These artifacts and materials were housed first in Calvin Ulrey Hall and then in the "Museum" in the basement of the Communications building. In the Fall of 2007 the entire "Museum" was either put on permanent loan to the Manchester History Center, or boxed and packaged for future display by the College. Jeanine Wine was responsible for the packaging. The African Art Collection was photographed and packaged and put into storage on the College Campus (Holl-Kintner). When Holl-Kinter was remodeled in 2011 the art collection was moved to the North Manchester Center for History.
These Liberian materials were found by Jeanine Wine in the "Museum." Many of them have Kessler's name on them and are part of the Donald E. and Olive Kessler Collection. UPDATE: The boxes of artifacts were later moved from north Manchester Center for History into the Neher Maintenance Center on the Manchester University campus. During the Summer of 2017 Jeanine Wine and student worker in the Archives, Zoe Vorndran, vacuumed the objects, packed them in archival materials, and moved them into a temperature and humidity monitored room in the archives. A updated database of the MU ethnographic art collection was also created at this time.
