Correspondence and photos from Delbert Blickenstaff regarding Dr. Virginia Keller's CPS oral history project:

  • The B-Complex Experiment

 

1.  Letter from Delbert D. Blickenstaff to Julie Garber.

2.  Letter (1946) from Major, Sn. C., Commanding, George H. Berryman to The Surgeon General, U.S. Army, regarding the "manner of performance of duty of seven volunteer subjects, B-Complex experiment."   This is a letter of commendation to Blickenstaff, Crill, Dibrell, Jr., Heisler, Miller, Smith and Lee Smith, Jr., -  "who stayed for varying lengths of time after their official release by Selective Service in the interests of properly finishing the job begun."

3.  Letter to Delbert Blickenstaff from George H. Berryman, major, Sn. C., Commanding, 23 May 1946.  This letter expresses major Berryman's gratitute for Delbert's cooperation and participation in the B-copmplex experiment.  It is a letter of thanks and friendship as Berryman retires from the Army.

4.  "Certificate of release from active participation in work of national importance under civilian direction."   Copy.

5.  Four photographs of men in the experiment, including Delbert D. Blickenstaff.

Bio History Note

"Since July 1945, seven volunteer subjects, banded together under the supervision of the Brethren Service Committee, Elgin, Illinois, have been on detached service at the Medical Nutrition Laboratory and Northwestern University Medical School in order to permit the investigation of the effects of a restricted intake of B-complex vitamins and protein upon physical and psychomotor efficiency." from Director, Civil Public Health & Nutrition Division, letter, 16 May 1946.
