Scope and Content

One beautifully bound Chinese book with silk cover and gold flecked case with hinges, presented to Dr. Winger by Hung Nien Cheng (President of Chi-nan University, see MC201194a,b). The book appears to be similar to MC2011/94a,b in content, but this is an elaborate edition.

The subject is the funeral/burial procession of General Sun Yat-sen, sometimes referred to as the "father of modern China."  This is thought to be an original first copy.

Date of Accession11 March 2011
Bio History Note

The Archivist believes this ornately covered book was given to President Otho Winger as a personal gift.  The inscription eliminates Hung Nien Cheng's position of President of the Chi-nan University, which is included in a more informal paper bound version that was presented to Manchester College (see MC2011/94a,b). .

At least two of Hung Nien Cheng's children  attended Manchester College.  Dorothy Cheng graduated in 1930.  Her sister, Mary Cheng, also studied at Manchester for a time, but died shortly after returning to China.

Otho Winger officiated at the wedding of Hung Nien Cheng's son, Howard Cheng, to Ella Ling (another Manchester alumna).
