Scope and Content

The three volumes described are the gifts of Dr. Eldon R. Burke. At the time received, they represent the 100,000th volume of the library and the first volumne of the Library's second 100,000 volumes. 

MC2011/108a: 1793 edition of the nine volumes of "Tristram Shandy," by Laurence Sterne.

MC2011/108b: 1753 edition of "The Spectator, Volume 2." It includes the daily issues from Saturday, 2 June to Thursday, 13 September of 1711.

MC2011/108c: Volume 4 of a 1754 edition of "The Tatler."

"The nine volumes of Tristram Shandy appeared from 1760 to 1767.  This edition, dated 1793, contains all nine volumes of this famous novel of Laurence Sterne's creative genius."

Vols. 1-7 contain no. 1-555, originally issued Mar. 1, 1711-Dec. 6, 1712; v. 8, nos. 556-635, June 18-Dec. 20, 1714

We only have v.2, which contains nos.81 (June 2, 1711)-169 (September 13, 1711)

"This 1753 edition of THE SPECTATOR, volume 2, included the daily issues from Saturday, June 2 to Thursday, September 13, of the year 1711."

First published as 'The tatler'. A reprint of 271 numbers, originally published in folio three times a week, from 12 April 1709 to 2 January 1710.

We only have v.4, which contains nos. 190 (June 27, 1710)-271 (January 2, 1710)

"The popularity of THE TATLER, even two generations after first publication, is evident in this volume 4 of a 1754 edition, gift of Dr. Eldon R. Burke.
