Articles from the August 18, 1958, "News Journal," August 25, 1958 "News Journal," and the September 15, 1958 "News Journal." | | Date of Accession | 20 March 2008 | | Bio History Note | In August, 1958, a Dutch KLM Super-Constellation airliner fell into the Atlantic Ocean about 130 miles northwest of Ireland. On board were 91 passengers and eight crew members. All died. At least 20 of the passengers were Church of the Brethren members returning from a tour following a celebration at Schwarzenau, Germany. The celebration was in recognition of the 250th anniversary of the Church of the Brethren. Four individuals who had attended, or who were attending, Manchester College were lost in the accident. These were Mr. and Mrs. Max Snider and Mr. and Mrs. Galen Stinebaugh. Mrs. Max Snider, the former Joyce Rust, was the 1957 May Queen at Manchester College. During the 1957-58 school year she taught at Silver Lake while her husband was completing work for a degree at the College. Mr. Snider had helped to organize the trip.
