Bio History Note

Author, Theodore Dreiser, visited North Manchester during the summer of 1915.  His impressions and observations of the community were included on several pages in his autobiography, "A Hoosier Holiday."  This article answers questions such as "What was Dreiser doing in North Manchester?" "What books and writings were authored by Dreiser?" "What makes 'A Hoosier Holiday' so special?" "What were some of Dreiser's 'firsts'?" "What were his overall impressions of the town?"  "Did he have family connections in the vicinity of North Manchester?"

John Knarr writes about Dreiser's family and includes material on the Snap/Snepp/Sheneb/Shenep/Schneb/Schnebb family as well as on the Fruit family.

A second article in the newsletter prints, "A Trip to Niagara Falls, 1925." This travel account from 1925 was discovered among papers donated to the North Manchester Center for History by Descendants of Ellis and Harold Miller.

John Knarr is a historian and an alumnus of Manchester College, Class of 1964.
