Scope and Content

An old German bible without a cover or date.  Jeanine Wine found a typewritten page within the leaves of the book.  This page remains with the bible and has additional information. Following is an excerpt from this description.  It is not known who researched or wrote it:

"A Rare Edition (undated) of the Lutheran translation of the Bible into German was brought to America by Johann Georg Gumpp on September 18, 1732.  He is the only one of that name listed as having entered Philadelphia port before 1808 as an immigrant and is there-fore the ancestor of the Gump families of the Church of the Brethren in America.  The date of the printing of this volume was likely between 1697 and 1701 since a German King, Augustus II, ruled those years over both Poland and Saxony and by him permission was given to print this edition.  It is one of some 253 editions printed in the century before 1719 in Germany."
