The son of Church of the Brethren missionaries to China, relief worker, tractor unit leader, director of the US State Department's Foreign Service Institute, and an alumnus of Manchester College, Howard Sollenberger, enjoyed rank equivalent to an Assistant Secretary of State, and in the opinion of Ralph Smeltzer, the highest position attained by a man of Brethren background in the government. [See "Messenger, October 1977 and Archives website for a book and a film titled, "Church of the Brethren China Relief," and "Plowboys in China: The Story of the Brethren Service Commission's Tractor Unit."]

Howard Sollenberger donated the Chinese rubbings (now located outside of the Archives' entrance) to Manchester College.

Note: Howard Sollenberger made remarks at the dedication of Cordier Auditorium 23 September1978. Ambassador Andrew Young, U. S. Representative to the United Nations gave the dedicatory address.
