Bio History Note

A. B. Ulrey: First biology teacher at Manchester College, born near North Manchester, Indiana on a farm about one mile north of Liberty Mills.

He was listed as one of the teachers at Manchester College in the spring of 1891 and is professed to be the first and only science teacher at the school up to 1900.  Ulrey spent major time between 1892 and 1894 teaching zoology at Indiana University and completing his M.A. (1894).  Professor Ulrey's primary employment between 1894 and 1900 was with Manchester College.  

Professor Ulrey was a member of the United Brethren church, although his parents were members of the (then) German Baptist Brethren, the  name changing to the Church of the Brethren in 1908. In 1895 the college faculty was composed of about 10 persons, the Ulrey teaching all the science curriculum. During his time at Manchester College he also served as secretary of the faculty.
