Featured in this slow-motion, Jimmie Phend scored to give Ball State (in white jerseys with shoulder stripes) a 6-0 lead. Manchester (in their all-gold) rallied in the 4th quarter. McClintic, Wood (#33), and Summe (#40) tackled Phend on a 4th-down punt attempt to give the Spartans the ball on Ball State’s 21 yard line. From there, running a muscular single-wing, backs Lew Cameron (#15), Bill Milliner (#32), and Bob Brandon (#53) alternated carries. Brandon scored on a sweep to the left corner, where he was met by part of the standing-room only crowd of 4,000. He then kicked the winning extra-point. Some other identifiable players are Phil Domer (35), Glenn Kistler (30), Everett Huth (63). Coached by Carl Burt, the Spartans finished the 1940 season with a record of 5-2-1. Their 4-0 Indiana Collegiate Conference record tied for first place with Butler. Besides Ball State, wins came over Hanover, Valparaiso, Central Normal, and Defiance.
