Blair Helman, Dr. and Mrs. Fleuckiger (former Music Dpt. Chair).
  • Nelhybel in rehearsal for the 25th Anniversary concert.

Folder #2 - Photographs -

  • We congratulate Mr. and Mrs. Mishel Piastro in the Winger Recital Hall following the Longines Symphonette Concert on Dec. 14, 1953.  Paul Keller is at extreme left.  The Piastro pet is "Amber."
  •  Mishel Piastro with my student Sue (Weaver) Strickler.

Folder #3 - Photographs -

  • Afternoon rehearsal (1958) of the String Symphony Festival when Arthur Fiedler had to cancel as guest conductor and Vernon Stinebaugh substituted.  Fiedler then came in 1959.
  • 1958 String Symphony Festival.

Folder #4  - Photograph - As a member of the Chapel Committee in my early years, I was invited to put on a program.  I thought a number of faculty members played instruments so I got about 14 members together, and most of them can be identified.  We even did a movement of Hayden's "Surprise Symphony." There is an amusing story connected with this performance, I tell in some of my speeches. Also some of this gang help(ed) move 18 pianos from the Ad Bldg. to Winger Bldg. upon completion. Lots of jokes connected with that undertaking! Some of the faculty members include (possibly) Dean Garver, Doc Niswander, Professor Holsinger and Vernon Stinebaugh.

Folder #5 -

Program for 25th Aniversay of String Festival, Vaclav Nelhybel, guest conductor, featuring the Indianapolis Arlington High School Orchestra, Priscilla Smith, Conductor.

Letter from Vernon Stinebaugh to President Jo Young Switzer.

"Two Acres of Strings," Manchester College publication with photograph from the Ft. Wayne News Sentinal. This article gives the history of Manchester College's String Festival and lists famous guest conductors.

Folder #6 - Score of Danza, by Vaclav Nelhybel that was composed especially for the String Festival orchestra through the commission of Stinebaugh.  Nelhybel dedicates the piece to Vernon Stinebaugh and autographs this score. See transcription in History section.  Note from "Kerby."

Folder #7 - Newspaper clipping from The News-Journal, North Manchester, Indiana, 17 May 1965 - "Civic Symphony Honors Prof. Vernon Stinebaugh" - [note: the Civic Symphony is an organization separate from the String Festival.]  The picture shows J. W. Daggett of the Symphony Society presenting Prof. Stinebaugh with an engraved pen desk set in recognition of Stinebaugh's 19 years service with the orchestra, the first four as concertmaster, four as concertmaster and assistant conductor, and then eleven years as the regular conductor.  Dwight Oltman, college band director will assume direction of the Civic Symphony and Prof. Stinebaugh will return to his former position as concertmaster.

Folder #8 -

Stinebaugh letter describing the significance of the collection including the impressive positions held by the  guest conductors.

Photo promotional of the 22nd (1968) and 23rd (1969) Annual String Festivals with guest conductors, Dr. Robert Klotman and Dr. Morris Hochberg, respectively.

Letter  to Vernon Stinebaugh from Vaclav Nelhybel, 27 April 1971 expressing praise and thanks. (copy or original?)

Copy of Stinebaugh letter 1 November 1971 to String and Orchestra Friends.

Article for January 1971 "Musicator," announcing Nelhybel as Guest Conductor of the Manchester College 25th Annual String Festival and presenting a history of the program.

Memo to all Indiana String and Orchestra Directors regarding Vaclav Nelhybel as Guest Conductor 17 April 1971.  The memo also describes the innovation in the program with a "new" format that includes a performance of an Indiana high school orchestra in a portion of the concert (thus the previous mention of the Indianapolis Arlington High School Orchestra, Priscilla Smith, Conductor - in the anniversary program).
