Bio History Note

Note adhered to the video box is from MC President Parker Marden, 28 December 1998.  Some parts of the note are hard to read.  It goes something like this:

Ferne:

This videotape contains film clips from the Don Martin and Carl Holl family in the 1930's - (courtesy?) of Carl Holl, Jr., MD in Noblesville, Indiana.  Please use it as you see to be best.  You might want a few alumni from the 1930's to identfy folks and events while that is possible.  Thanks, Parker

For the Archives

Don Martin was the Chemistry teacher on campus who had a video camera.

Other families are included in the movie but have not yet been identified.

Judging by the age of Louise (Holl) Weldy [who dates herself at around 12 years old], the first part of the film was made circa 1938. The Martin and Holl children get YOUNGER as the film progresses and so the YEAR(S) must change as well.

00:01 - The movie starts with a woman preparing chicken.  The woman is Don Martin's mother.

00:08 - In the beginning of the movie children line up from tallest to smallest.  The identities of these children follow from tallest to shortest: Louise Holl Weldy, Carolyn Holl Leffel, "Mick" Martin (his name was really Don Martin, Jr., but they called him "Mick"), Tom Martin, Rose (Martin) Speicher, Carl Holl, Jr. (the tiny one).

00:20 - Two Martin boys boxing.

00:34 - Two boys boxing. The bigger boy is a Martin, and the smaller boy is Carl Holl, Jr.

1:09 - Lucille (Banberry sp?) Martin, Don Martin's wife carry baby.

1:12 - President Otho Winger.

1:47 - Beulah Holl is the girl in the center in the lighter colored dress.

4:28 - Chemistry Building on viewer's left with gymnasium in background.

5:23 - Back Row from viewer's left to right - (Barbara Stauffer, the basketball coach's daughter) - (Mary Emma Miller, R.H.Miller's daughter) - (Louise (Holl) Weldy, Carl Holl's daughter).

Second Row from viewer's left to right - (first girl?) - (dark hair head turned backwards, Mary Janet Meyer, Prof. Meyer of the education department's daughter) - (lighter haired girl with head turned backwards) - (smaller girl on end with hair parted on viewer's right, Carolyn Holl, Carl Holl's daughter) - girl in front of Carolyn also with hair parted on viewer's right but who has an arm around a little boy, this is Dorotha Neher, Professor Neher's daughter ).

5:30 - Two little girls. The girl on the viewer's left is Mary Emma Miller (R. H. Miller's daughter) and the girl on the viewer's right is Louis (Holl) Weldy (Carl Holl's daughter).

5:48 - probably the Martin children, Mick (Don, Jr.), Tom, Rose.

6:17 - Probably Luckills (Banberry sp?) Martin with Mick, Tom and Rose.

6:27 -  Don Martin is the moustached man holding three children. These are probably Don's children.

6:34 - Making pies?

Carl Holl briefly appears in a shot with Chemistry building on the viewer's left.

Archivist Note

Description prepared 16 October 2013 by Jeanine M. Wine and updated 20 April 2017 and again on 21 May 2018  by Jeanine Wine following conversations with Carl Holl, Jr. who was able to identify the individuals above.  Because a digital file had been made, the original VHS tape was given back to the donor, Carl Holl, Jr. The DVD was also given as a gift.

On 21 May 2018 Louise (Holl) Weldy and her daughter, Karen Karkuff, reviewed the movie and were able to make additional identifications.

Videographer, David Sollenberger, created a DVD from the original movie footage (reel-to-reel). A digital copy is on the archives network.
