Scope and Content

1    Color photograph of building.  Back indicates it was sent from Windermere, West Morland, England on 13 August 1973.  Note reads in part, "On train to Windermere, Very bumpy.  Dear Doris, We are going to stay at Hotel Windermere in a 'treble'--my 2 friends and I...Love, Lois."  Back labeled, "Guild Hall:  Here the Lord Mayor entertains the famous visitors to London..."

2    Color photograph of building.  Back indicates it was sent from Winchester, England on 23 May 1978.  Note reads in part, "Yesterday PM returning from Winchester College we stopped at this gate and climbed to St Swithan's Church...Love, Mary."  Back labeled, "Kingsgate, Winchester."

3    Color photograph of buildings, road.  Front labeled, "St. James's Church, Chipping Camden."  Back indicates it was sent from Dover, Kent, England on 10 May 1974.  Note reads in part, "Dear Doris, The Cotswolds are uniquely beautiful...Sincerely, Paul and Hazel."

4    Color photograph of building.  Front labeled, "Wollaton Hall, Nottingham."  Back indicates it was sent from Nottingham, England."  Note reads in part, "Aug 1, 1976 Dear Doris, You are a dear to write.  Few people here receive mail..."

5    Color photograph of embroidered fabric.  Back indicates it was sent from Muswell Hill [?] on 27 March 1968.  Note reads in part, "Happy Birthday.  We trust that your day will be a good one...Cordially, Colburns."  Back labeled, "Curtain (detail) English:  early 17th century...Victoria and Albert Museum."

6    BW photograph of sculpture.  Back indicates it was sent from Exeter, Devon, England, on 4 August 1968.  Note reads in part, "Dear Dr. Garey-We spent a most worthwhile day yesterday in the Hardy country...Best wishes, Colburns."  Back labeled, "Bronze bust of Thomas Hardy (1840-1927) by Maggie Richardson.  Dorset County Museum, Dorchester." Some water damage.

9    Color photograph of body of water with hills in background.  Back indicates it was sent on 25 August 1973.  Note reads in part, "Dear Doris, We are engaging in domestic activity-a launderette visit!  What a job to find it...Love, Lois."  Back labeled, "The Queen's View of Loch Tummel, Pitlochry." Some water damage.

10    Color photograph of stained glass.  back indicates it was sent from Muswell Hill on 9 October 1967.  Note reads in part, "Dear Dr. Garey-We appreciated receiving your letter with its lovely description of the faculty workshop and freshman reception..."  Back labeled, "Caterbury Cathedral, the Becket Window."  Some water damage.

11    Color photograph of narrow street and buildings.  Back indicates it was sent from Norwich, Norfolk, England, on 21 July 1977.  Note reads in part, "Norwich is such a fascinating, ancient, medieval city...Fondly, Mary."  Back labeled, "Elm Hill, Norwich."  Slight water damage.

12    Color photograph of cathedral.  Back indicates it was sent from Cheltenham, England, on 18 August 1966.  Note reads in part, "No doubt by now you are in your own place.  Hope you have recovered from your strenuous travels and that your brain can now relax a bit!  Hope you found your mother well...Love from Faith."  Back labeled, "The West End and Monastic Ruins, Worcester Cathedral."  Slight water damage.

13    Color photograph of street lined by residences.  Front labeled, "Haslemere, Shepherds Hill."  back indicates it was sent from England in 1976.  Note reads in part, "Dear Doris, You are a dear!  Your letter arrived the morning after I arrived and it is a joy to receive mail...Love, Lois,"  

14    Color photograph of aerial view of river, bridge, and city.  Back indicates it was sent from Edinburgh on 24 August 1976.  Note reads in part, "Dear Doris, I'm sitting in the living room of the White Hall Hotel where we had rooms last year...Love, Lois."  Back labeled, "Tower of London and Tower Bridge."  Some water damage.

15    BW photograph of cathedral ruins.  Back indicates it was sent from Tintern, Monmouthshire, England, in 1967.  Note reads in part, "Dear Dr. Garey-Our wanderings have brought us to this historic and picturesque spot...Sincerely Colburns."  Back labeled, "Tintern Abbey, Monmouthshire.  Crossing of Church looking S.E."  

16    Color photograph of street, vehicles, buildings.  Note reads in part, "Dear Doris, I spent the last day of my holidays in London with a friend having a look round places I had not visited since I was a child..."  Back labeled in part, "Admiralty Arch, London:  The Arch was designed by Sir Aston Webb, P.R.A., and erected in 1911..."

17    Color photograph of old and new bridges over river.  Note reads in part, "Llandudno, N. Wales Dear Doris, I was glad to hear from you.  This is not intended to be in answer to it;  that will come in time...have enjoyed a short holiday in lovely Wales...Love from Evelyn."  Back labeled in part, "Conway Castle.  Before 1826 the crossing of the river beneath the walls of Conway's 13th century castle was often difficult and sometimes dangerous.  In that year Telford's fine suspension bridge was erected..."

18    BW photograph of painting.  Back is labeled, "National Gallery of Scotland.  Guercino.  St. Peter penitent."

19    Colorized BW photograph of road with buildings in background.  Front labeled, "Townsend Road, South Brookline, N.H.  Published by A. A. Hall."  Back indicates it was sent from Brookline, N.H. on 12 August 1910 or 1916.  Note reads in part, "Dear Doris:  Guess you went to the Beach today anyway didn't you?  How is the housekeeping getting on?...With love from Anna."

21    BW photograph of interior of old home.  Front labeled, "The Farmhouse Kitchen.  Ryedale Folk Museum.  Hutton-Le-Hole."  Back indicates it was sent from Bangor, Caernarvonshire, Wales, on 26 July 1974.  Note reads in part, "Dear Doris, Did you get to York on your later trip?...The folk museum in a tiny village outside of York brought the 18th and 19th centuries to life.  Love, Lois."  

22    Color photograph of cathedral.  Front labeled, "St. Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh."  Back indicates it was sent from Edinburgh on 29 July 1977.  Note reads in part, "Dear Dr. Garey, I just had lunch in Jenner's and have been walking miles today...Love, Mary."  Back labeled in part, "St. Giles Cathedral is the principal Presbyterian church in Edinburgh and stands on the famous royal mile..."

23    Color photograph of park with monument in background.  Front labeled, "The Scott Monument, Princes Street, Edinburgh."  Back indicates it was sent from East Orange, NJ on September 10, 1976.  Note reads in part, "Dear Doris, Here's a bit of Edinburgh that I could not resist sending to you...Love, Lois."  Back labeled in part, "The Scott Monument dominates Princes Street which has been described as Great Britain's most beautiful street and is certainly one of her showpieces..."

25    Color photograph of meadow, wooded area, water and hills in background.  Note reads in part, "Holidaying in the Lake District.  May 21st.  Dear Doris, F. and I are having such a wonderful feasst of Springtime beauty...from Evelyn."  Back labeled in part, "Rydal Water, Westmorland as seen from 'Dora's Field' at daffodil time..."

26    Color photograph of residence.  Note reads in part, "St. Martin's Hotel Bouress [?] Windermere.  May 20th.  Dear Doris, We, Evelyn and I, are on holiday in Cumberland-the Lake District-and have mentioned you several times when seeing lovely things and places that would have interested you...Love from Faith."  Back labeled, "Dove Cottage, Grasmere, Lake District."

28    Color photograph of hills and body of water in background.  Note is continued from postcard #27 "...Love from Faith."  Back labeled, "Llanberis pass, looking westward.  A view down this famous pass in Caernarvonshire, looking towards the twin lakes of Llyn Padarn and Llyn Peris..."

29    Color photograph of cottage with gardens in foreground.  Back indicates it was send from Winchester, England on 30 July 1970.  Back is numbered 1.  Note reads in part, "You probably have these pictures that I am sending to you, but you may enjoy looking at them again..."  Back labeled, "Thomas Hardy's Birthplace, Higher Bockhampton."

Doris Bates Garey taught in the English Department of Manchester College from 1956-1972.  She died 23 December 1981.
