Scope and Content

A detailed description of the Roy Plunkett collection - Box #2: 1988 - including 50 years of "Teflon" and the Du Pont Plunkett awards (1988, 1989, 1990, 1991). 

#54a - Du Pont's 50th Anniversary Schedule of Events for ("Teflon", Nylon, "Butacite") and for Fluoropolymers/Wire and Cable ("Teflon" Only) from December 1987 through December 1988.

Folder #54b - Plunkett's general travel file for 1988 including the article, "Du Pont targets Europe, celebrates Teflon," 25 April 1988 (European Chemical News).

Folder #55 - Invitations, programs, and menu for Plunkett event at Smithsonian (26 May 1988) - schedule and correspondence - travel arrangements. Programs contains reproduction of two pages from Plunkett's notebook - The Director of the National Museum of American History and The Chairman of the Board of E. I. de Pont de Nemours & Company host a preview to "A Material World" and also celebrate The 50th Anniversary of TEFON at the National Museum of American History. Correspondence regarding the making of a movie for use by DuPont.

Folders #59 and #60a- Albums (both albums are practically the same) - "Our commitment to tomorrow began 50 years ago, TEFLON." 50th anniversary celebration program for the National Museum of American History and Du Pont de Nemours & Company event in Washington, D.C. 26 May 1988 - Snapshots of the Plunketts within the Du Pont Washington Works and snapshots from special event with gifts.  Festive pictures of ferryboat trip to and from historic island location where another event was held.

Folder #62 - Plunkett visit to Parkersburg, West Virginia, September 1988 - correspondence and clippings. In a letter of December of 1988 Plunkett outlines his tour plans: After Parkersburg a four week trip to Japan and China with stopovers in Alaska and Hawaii.

Folder #65 - Plunkett's own folder on Japan visit 1988 - including correspondence, Shimizu remarks, questions, answers, ozone issue, and memorabilia.

Folder #66 - Plunkett folder on the Shimizu-MDF plant.

Folder packet #67 - A multitude of materials regarding the Du Pont "Plunkett Award" competitions - the first award being presented in 1988.  An album titled "50 Years of TEFLON fluorocarbon resin 1938 - 1988" that gives the history of Plunkett's discovery and culminates with the Plunkett Award ceremony, correspondence, notes, namecards, programs and winners for various years (1989, 1990, 1991)photographs, video arrangements, etc. See also Box #3 Folder #77 - 1991 March 7 - 11 for more information on 1991 Plunkett awards.
