Bio History Note

Jean Childs Young was a 1954 graduate of Manchester College, 1953 May Day Queen, wife of Andrew Young, and recipient of an honorary doctoral degree from Manchester College (1979-1980). For a photograph of Ms. Young receiving the honorary degree, see MC2010/85 (located in photo file folder section in order of accession number).

Jean Childs would become Jean Childs Young, wife to activist and politician, Andrew Young.

An article in Jean's folder confirms that Andrew Young's first visit to Manchester College was in May at the time of Jean's coronation.  This supports the theory that the photograph of Jean at "Our Royal Holiday" banquet includes Andrew Young as her escort in the picture.  For an actual copy of the "Royal Holiday" program that is on the table in this picutre see MC2007/34.

Jean also had two sisters who attended Manchester College before her:

  • Norma Louise Childs, BS 1948
  • Cora Ann Childs, BA 1951
