Bio History Note

Speakers at the 24 October 1975 Chemistry Symposium were:

Dr. Paul Flory, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry in 1974. Flory was a pioneer in research on the chemistry and physics of giant molecules (polymers) and developed many of the theoretical approaches and techniques that enabled chemists to begin to understand macromolecules and to develop thousands of new polymeric compounds used in plastics, fibers, paints, and countless other products.

Dr. Roy Plukett, who discovered polytetraflouroethylene (Teflon) in 1939, starting a branch in the polymer field that grew to huge proportions.

Dr. Allan Shultz, research assistant to Dr. Flory at Cornell University and first of Flory's students to receive the Ph.D. degree (1953), and who at the time of the seminar was serving as a research chemist with General Electric Corporate Research and Development.

Dr. Rex Gosnell, who at the time of the seminar was senior staff scientist, Polymeric Materials, Convair Div. of General Dynamics Corp. and vice president of the Riggs Engineering Co. of San Diego, and has also been engaged in research and development in the improvement of the environmental performance of advanced polymers.
