Bio History Note

Bertha (Hoover) Culler attended Manchester College for 2 semesters in 1900, concentrating in the area of Music. She appears in the alumni directory as Bertha Hoover. Later, she was called to the ministry by the Church of the Brethren while at Bethany Bible Seminary in Chicago, but gave up this position when she and her husband, Edward Culler, moved to Alabama.

Bertha writes in her diary: Nearly forty years ago after having been at Bethany Bible Seminary in Chicago several years. I left there as a minister.  This was granted without my request.  At matriculation I arranged for a course almost as my husband did. Homiletic and Religious pedagogy in preparation to be as a helpmate in the ministry. Not a preacher.  It was suggested Unknown to me that I should do public speaking (sentences unclear)...Frequently I spoke after leaving.. For several years I spoke (unclear sentence)...On arriving in the South-land I immediately discovered that a woman in the pulpit was not desirable.  So I did not continue in that line of church work.  Too, there were so many children and young people that I had more than I could do in undertaking to direct them.
