Scope and Content

A collection of scanned excerpts from Arthur Showalter's (MC Class of 1928) photograph album reflecting his Manchester College experience (circa his Sophomore year 1925-1926 - through Senior year (1927-1928) .

There is a problem identifying the May Day Queens as labeled in the scrapbook, versus how they are identified in the Auroras. Queens are always one year off - but still - the photographs don't look similar.  More research is needed.

Bio History Note

Family relationships: Manchester alumna, Martha (Showalter) Miller taught Home Economics at Manchester College. She married alumnus, Ed Miller, who taught Chemistry at Manchester.  Martha's father and mother were also Manchester College graduates.  Her father's name was Arthur K. Showalter.

The 1926 "Aurora" pictures the "Slam Ball Contest" held "last fall" between the Freshman and Sophomores in the old athletic field.  Arthur would have been a Sophomore.(pg. 149).

The 1926 "Aurora" pictures the "Freshman Sophomore Tug-of-War (pg. 151). Although Showalter was a Freshman in the Fall of 1926 it is unclear whether this pictures is from the same event.

The Men's 1928 Glee Club appears to have taken a combination singing and sight-seeing tour to Ohio during Spring of 1928.

"Naughty" is found on page 160 in the 1928 "Aurora."

Spring 1928 Men's Glee Club (copied from the 1928 "Aurora," pg. 87): The Men's Glee Club went on a ten day tour through Northwestern Ohio this spring. The strength and harmony of the men's voices make their organization one of high merit.  People enjoy hearing them and their programs are in great demand.  Formerly the two Clubs have made their tours together, but it was impossible this year because of the great distance and the large number of members of the clubs. Note: "Prexy Zook" in the photograph is probably Gorman Zook, President of the Men's Glee Club.

Travel: It appears as if Arthur and colleagues left Manchester during the summer of 1928 on an adventurous sightseeing trip with the goal of attending the 1928 Church of the Brethren Annual Conference held at La Verne, California.  This was also a year when MC President, Otho Winger, served as Annual Conference moderator.
