Scope and Content

Wheelock China, four pieces advertising North Manchester College made in Germany for merchants, R. F. Hays and Son, 130 East Main Street, North Manchester, Indiana.

Bio History Note

Prior to 1895, and acquisition by members of the Church of the Brethren, Manchester College was known as North Manchester College. The small cup and saucer were obtained for MU by Jeanine Wine.  They were spotted on eBay by North Manchester historian, Allan White.  

Wheelock Company made souvenirs for countries around the world - but primarily for the U.S. market. They are were from a collection in Minnesota that numbered into the thousands of souvenir dishes. (Paul Ostlie, antique dealer, 11 August 2016)

The two small dishes came to the archives by mail ( December 2019). They were donated by alumna,  Jamie Sue Van Buskirk (MC 1975). She had found them at a flea market in Reamstown, Pennsylvania.


Allan White provided the following information:

Ceramic mug made in Germany for Hays & Son, North Manchester.  They were located in what was known as the Schoolcraft Building (130 East Main). 11 August 2016.
