Manchester University preps for eSports team

Manchester eSports Preparations are nearly complete for an eSports arena at Manchester University’s North Manchester campus, with state-of-the-art equipment on order.

The arena is at East Hall, and the plan is to begin play this fall, have tryouts before the semester ends and start competition in the spring season.

Manchester eSports is a varsity-level, coed team, competing in multiplayer online gaming. Students represent Manchester, compete against other schools and have the opportunity to compete in post-season tournaments.

Manchester eSports has joined the National Association of Collegiate eSports (NACE) and declared its intention to compete in two games starting this spring.

Following tryouts, MU will build the roster for a League of Legends five-person team and a Rocket League three-person team. The NACE spring season starts in February.

Team members will attend a daily practice and study table, competing in scrimmages and regular season matches several times a week.

Exploding in popularity at the collegiate and professional levels, eSports matches can be found on ESPN and digital media platforms such as Twitch and YouTube.

There is potential for other games at Manchester, depending on interest at the University and at schools nationwide. They could include Overwatch, Smite, Paladins, Hearthstone, Fortnite, Super Smash Bros., FIFA, NBA 2K and Madden.

The University now offers the Manchester Gaming Society, which brings eSports players together for casual and competitive play. https://link.manchester.edu/gaming
