Manchester University broke ground on the Lockie and Augustus Chinworth Center on Friday, May 11.

President Dave. McFadden welcomed those assembled, and was followed by Jim Chinworth, who spoke on behalf of his family.

Connected to the Jo Young Switzer Center by an enclosed walkway, the Chinworth Center will feature new classrooms to accommodate Manchester's growing enrollment. The second floor will be dedicated to the Arthur L. Gilbert College of Business.

Senior Mallorie Jennings spoke about her experiences in the College of Business, followed by first-year student Olivia Wilson.

Architects and general contractors are Michael Kinder and Sons Construction and Design Collaborative.
Herb Chinworth’s generosity named the Lockie and Augustus Chinworth Center to honor his parents. \

He studied at Manchester from 1938 to 1940. Though he completed his chemical engineering studies at Purdue University, he and his wife, Arlene, continued to support Manchester in many ways through the years. He never forgot the education he received here and the professors who encouraged and mentored him.

Herb Chinworth enjoyed a long and successful career with The Dow Chemical Co. in Michigan. The middle of three sons who grew up in Warsaw, Ind., Herb credited his parents with teaching him the importance of hard work, perseverance and taking care of each other.
Manchester awarded him with an honorary doctorate in 2012. He died in 2017.
