Shannon Lee wins Student of Integrity scholarship
Shortly after arriving home from a BCA semester abroad in Chennai, India, Manchester University student Shannon Lee learned that she was going to be honored by the Better Business Bureau serving northern Indiana with a Student of Integrity Scholarship.
Lee, who is from Decatur, Ind., is majoring in religious studies and sociology. She is on track to graduate in 2019.
Each candidate submitted an essay on how they live a life of integrity, including the resolution of a specific ethical challenge and the ensuing impact, both now and in their future.
Lee wrote about being a tutor in eighth grade and choosing honor as a tutor rather than share her own homework from the year before with a friend.
“We have very little control over what many other people do, but we do have control over ourselves and how we influence those immediately around us,” she wrote. “I do my best to lead by example when it comes to ethical behavior and embodying the qualities of honesty, sincerity, and integrity.”
At Manchester, Lee is a member of the Academic Integrity Panel. This body is made up of a dean, two faculty members and two students chosen by the dean’s office. This committee has a great deal of responsibility when weighing cases of students’ academic dishonesty. They decide disciplinary sanctions that could range from a letter of apology, all the way up to suspension or expulsion.
Lee has also been an officer in the A Cappella Choir, Fiber Arts Club and Philosophy Club.
Students of Integrity receive a one-time, $2000 scholarship.
The nine honorees from colleges and high schools were selected by an independent panel of judges to represent the 20-county region and were recognized at the BBB Torch Awards for Ethics Recognition Luncheon.
