Indiana Tech and Manchester University have partnered to create a dual degree that pairs a Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm.D.) with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Professional Studies. A Pharm.D./MBA dual degree will distinguish you in an increasingly competitive job market and equip you with knowledge, skills and credentials that will give you flexibility throughout your career. You'll be well-prepared for leadership positions in managed care, hospitals, the pharmaceutical industry and independent pharmacies.

Why a dual degree?

  • Complete your dual degree in the same four years it takes to earn the Pharm.D., reducing the time and cost of pursuing them separately and putting you into the job market as soon as possible.  
  • Business-related credits earned in Manchester's Pharm.D. Program transfer toward the 30 credits needed for Indiana Tech's MBA Program in Professional Studies, and other Pharm.D. credits can be applied toward MBA elective requirements.

What is the purpose of a dual degree?
Combining the Pharm.D. and an MBA through Indiana Tech has the purpose of creating a unique and specially trained set of practitioners. This will be the second dual-degree opportunity for MU Pharm.D. students (MS in PGx), but the first offered in partnership with another institution. 

What is the timeline for the dual degree?
This program will allow students to complete the Pharm.D. degree as well as their MBA degree within the same four-year timeframe as traditional Pharm.D. students. 
    

How will students be able to complete both degrees within four years?
Ideally, dual-degree students will take online MBA courses through Indiana Tech in the summers between their P1 and P2 years and between their P2 and P3 years.  In their P2 spring, P3 fall and spring, and P4 year, dual-degree students will take one MBA course per semester.  A preferred plan of study is outlined below:

Any courses from the list below can be transferred in as the M.B.A concentration of Professional Studies.  These concentration courses must meet a minimum of 9 credit hours.  A letter grade of C or higher is required for transfer into the Indiana Tech MBA program.

How much will the dual degree cost?
The dual-degree cost will equate to the total of the Pharm.D. and MBA degree program costs combined.  However, nine of the 30 required credit hours can be transferred from the Pharm.D. program into the MBA, providing a cost savings to students completing both degrees concurrently. 

It is possible for a student who is concurrently enrolled and eligible at more than one school to receive Federal Direct Loans at each school. In addition to Federal Direct Loans, students may borrow loans through other federal programs (i.e. GradPLUS or private loans) up to the cost of attendance for a single academic program.  Manchester University and Indiana Tech have determined a cost of attendance that includes tuition and fees for both programs, plus living and personal expenses.  This cost of attendance is calculated as the maximum amount of loan eligibility a student has while dually enrolled at both institutions.

What will the application process look like?
First-year pharmacy students in the spring semester who are in good academic standing and have not remediated a course will be encouraged to apply. The application process is outlined here. There is no limit to the number of students that may be accepted into the dual-degree program. Part of the application process will be a review of applicants’ undergraduate and pharmacy GPA. The minimum cumulative GPA for consideration in the MBA program is 2.5.  Applicants below this GPA can apply but must gain approval by the  dean of pharmacy and graduate life sciences to be considered.

Change Your Passwords Before Extended Breaks

Before you leave campus for an extended period (like summer), please be sure to change your password to prevent its expiration while you’re away.

Major Security Issue

In the past week, we identified a situation where three employees’ email accounts were hacked and used to conduct a fraudulent email exchange.  After a detailed forensic investigation, we determined that the criminal only used the email accounts for the scam and the perpetrator did not read any email beyond the fraudulent email exchange.  However, as a result of these incidents, we must implement far more stringent security policies to ensure that we adequately protect MU information.

Beginning Monday, June 3rd, we will implement the new security protocol.  All employees including student workers will be required to have a longer, more complex password, change the password more frequently, and begin use of multi-factor authentication.  Custodial staff are the only exceptions.  The security protocol’s specifics and videos for training purposes are coming in a few days.

We acknowledge that changing our password policy makes your job more difficult.  However, we cannot allow a lax password policy to be used to broach our otherwise strong defenses.  We employees are the weakest link in our security chain.

New Mass Notification System

Starting July 1st, we’ll implement a new mass notification system, the system that texts you when an emergency happens on either campus.  We’re transitioning from Rave to InformaCast.  We’ll request your emergency contact information at that time.  We’ll provide instructions.

Changes to Printing@MU Coming

During the week of May 20th, we’re implementing three enhancements to our printing system forthcoming.  First, there’s a firmware update that fixes several nagging issues with the hardware.  Next, we’re changing the default for copying from color to black and white.  Finally, we’re implementing an additional security enhancement.  When a print job fails, from a paper jam or some other reason, the system will cancel the print job rather than risk printing the document without you present. 

REMINDER TO EMPLOYEES:  We will collect desktop printers this summer.  As an IVSI recommendation, the University no longer supports desktop printers.

Beware Scam Email

It bears repeating:  always view an email you receive with at least some suspicion.  Too frequently, bad people use the ease of the Internet to send a fraudulent email.  The number of scam types is astoundingly high.  What’s worse, criminals can easily make an email appear legitimate.  It takes little to no skill to make an email appear to be from someone you know when it’s not.  Criminals can also make duplicate the way legitimate companies format their email to include logos, etc.  Our email vendor, Microsoft, does a great job catching fraudulent email, but no system is perfect.

Our best advice:  remain ever vigilant.  If you question an email, contact Help Desk.  We’re happy to help you identify the risks.

Scam Targeting Current Students

The FBI recently warned that criminals are targeting current students using spearphishing campaigns (a means to obtain your username and password), especially during traditional financial aid dispersal periods.  With your credentials, the criminals log into the dispersal system to alter your direct deposit information to accounts of their choosing.  As with all email, students should beware email from lenders, etc.
