Middle East peace negotiator

speaks at Manchester on Feb. 14

Gershon Baskin, a participant in peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians in Gaza, will speak on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at Manchester College. The convocation begins at 7 p.m. in Cordier Auditorium on the North Manchester campus. The event is free, sponsored by the Peace Studies Institute at the College. Reservations are not needed.

Baskin is co-founder and former CEO of the Israel/Palestine Center for Research and Information, a public policy research think tank that works with government and civil society agencies.

Respected by both Israelis and Palestinians, the Center has served at the hub of negotiations between Israelis and Hamas and in securing the October 2011 release of Gilad Schalit, who was held by Hamas in Gaza for more than five years.

Baskin, an American-born Israeli, writes opinion articles frequently for Middle East newspapers and is highly regarded for shaping thinking on issues of justice in the region and supporting a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine.

Baskin’s visit is a valuable way for Manchester students and guests to understand recent events in the world from a peace perspective, said Julie Garber, lecturer and former director of Manchester College’s Plowshares grant to promote peace and justice studies.

“Baskin is a realist about security and a pragmatist about the necessity for reducing conflict in order to protect security,” said Garber. “He offers sensible thinking about a way forward and a hopeful prognosis for peace. His dramatic role in the back-channel negotiations for the release of Gilad Shalit is a fascinating story that illustrates that peace is possible.”
