‘Girl Rising’ documentary to replace Afghan speaker at MU

Due to unforeseen circumstances, a scheduled March 31 speaker at Manchester University, Shabana Basij-Rasikh, will be unable to give her presentation.

“The Hope of a Girl: School of Leadership, Afghanistan” will be replaced by excerpts from the 2013 documentary “Girl Rising” and a related discussion.

The film focuses on “ordinary girls who confront tremendous challenges and overcome nearly impossible odds to pursue their dreams,” according to its website, http://girlrising.com.

Several local speakers will discuss issues faced by girls in developing countries who wish to pursue an education.

The event is 3:30 p.m. in Cordier Auditorium on the North Manchester campus. It is free and open to the public.

The Peace Studies Institute will work to bring Basij-Rasikh, founder of the School of Leadership, Afghanistan, to campus next year to give her intended presentation.
