In a world where it seems everything is going digital, the intimacy of paper crafts is to be cherished.
Preserve tangible memories by learning new scrapbooking techniques this summer at Manchester University’s 9th Annual Scrapbooking Retreat. It is June 5-7 at the North Manchester campus.
Participants can choose between classes by two scrapbooking companies: a Close To My Heart class in which you will learn to make “flip flaps” and a Stampin’ Up class in which you will learn to make a “room divider” card.
Flip flaps are interactive, pop-up sleeves to fit many photos onto a single page. This class will cost $6, and each participant will receive a pack of flip flaps to get started.
“I will just demonstrate our albums and different page protectors and how to use the flip flaps on their pages,” said Terry Metzger, Close To My Heart consultant. Pre-registration for this class is required by May 26.
In the Stampin’ Up class with consultant Judy Boggs, learn to fold room divider cards, which resemble actual room dividers. After buying a $3 pre-registration kit, learn techniques that you can take with you after the class ends.
Each with a 6-foot table, scrapbookers will have plenty of space to spread out their materials, and you don’t even have to worry about picking up — at least until the course ends.
Overnight guests will stay in suite-style residence halls, each room containing two single beds, a private bathroom with a shower, and one set of towels and bed linens per guest. There is free Internet access.
Meals are prepared by Manchester’s national award-winning chef, Chris Fogerty. Meals will be offered beginning with dinner on Friday and ending with breakfast on Sunday.
The standard cost for the weekend retreat (with room) is $150; the cost for those who will not spend the night in residence halls is $95. Manchester University employees or alumni may attend the retreat for $135 (with room) and $85 for commuters. All returning scrapbookers will receive a $5 discount.
