Manchester College springs

into music with concerts, recitals

A Spring Choral Concert opens the season at Manchester College with the Chamber Singers and Cantabile women’s choir at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 1.

The program features the very difficult Hymn to St. Cecilia by Benjamin Britten and compositions by Debra Lynn, Chamber Singers conductor and chair of the Music Department. Lecturer Andrew Suhre, a 2008 graduate of the College, conducts the Cantabile. Tickets for Cordier Auditorium concert are $5; reservations are not necessary.

“Movie Magic and Moscow” is the theme for the Manchester Symphony Orchestra’s annual visit to the Honeywell Center in Wabash on Sunday, April 3. Arnold Irchai, former principal bassoonist of the Moscow Philharmonic, will join the 3 p.m. concert.

The MSO, conducted by Scott Humphries, assistant professor of music, will perform selections from Star Trek, Lonesome Dove, 1941, Lord of the Rings: Two Towers and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The free performance by community, student and faculty musicians is for the whole family; no tickets needed.

The Manchester College A Cappella Choir presents Carmina Burana, a cantata composed by Carl Orff based on poems from a medieval collection. The performance, conducted by Debra Lynn, begins at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 16 in Cordier Auditorium on the Manchester College campus. Tickets are $5; reservations are not necessary.

Music lovers also will enjoy the senior recitals of Manchester’s music majors, all in Wine Recital Hall on the east side of the North Manchester campus. The spring schedule includes:

  • Trumpet player Nicholas Kenny of Fort Wayne at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 15
  • Mezzo-soprano Stephanie Green of Fort Wayne at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 29
  • Soprano Kaitlin Hughes of Osgood, Ind., at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 7
