Students and staff paint the rock for 2021 International Peace Day.

Students, Clubs Paint MU Spirit Rock

Standing at seven feet tall, Manchester University’s Spirit Rock opposite the Jo Young Switzer Center is covered in layers upon layers of paint. Each layer tells a different story, whether it be to advertise upcoming campus club events or special months. Samantha Alley, the director of Student Involvement and Leadership Development at Manchester University, has direct oversight of what is painted on the Rock.
When it comes to painting the Rock, many clubs on campus will choose to advertise for their big upcoming events. For example, this past spring MAC painted the Rock to promote the 100th celebration of May Day. The Spirit Rock is seen by everyone who comes to campus, even if they are just driving through.
A group of first-year students was quick to agree that seeing the Rock painted in bright colors really catches their eyes, and that they often stop and read or just look at the design of the Rock. This past spring, the Rock was used to commemorate the class of 2021. The Rock was painted white and included the MU Crest. The seniors were then invited to sign their names on the Rock with sharpies.
The process for signing up to paint the Rock is relatively easy. If you want to advertise your club events, your team’s accomplishments or you would just like to boost campus spirit or morale, just email Sam Alley at SAAlley@manchester.edu. Paints and supplies will be provided. The reservation period runs from Sunday-Sunday. Rock designs must also be submitted via email and must be approved prior to painting.
