Counseling Services - Information for First-Year Students

Manchester students

Welcome to Manchester University!

Counseling services is glad you have chosen Manchester University and we want you to know we are available to assist you throughout your time here. We encourage you to browse around the website and learn more about the resources, what we do, where we are located and how to make an appointment.

If you have never participated in counseling before, we welcome you to make an appointment to learn more about who we are and what we do. Conversations with counseling staff are confidential.

We want to be a part of your overall success at Manchester University! From research conducted by National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI):

  • 40% of students do not seek help
  • 80% feel overwhelmed by their responsibilities
  • 50% have become so anxious that they struggled in school

We do not want you to feel alone in your struggles!

If you are struggling (including if you are struggling with homesickness) we are available to support you. (By the way, homesickness is normal and healthy. It makes sense that we feel a bit lost when we are away from the place we feel connected, secure with our supports, familiar with our surroundings, and generally competent.  When we go somewhere new, it takes a while for many to adjust.  Being a certain age or a certain maturity level does not predict if we will handle being away from home well or not. We are all made differently and adjusting to change is difficult for many – even if it is a positive change in your life.)

At counseling services we do not tell you what to do, but we listen and assist you in finding the solutions that are within you and right for you.  If you feel more comfortable having a friend come with you, please do. Our goal is that you feel comfortable.

Our Residential Life Staff (RAs and HDs, Hall Directors) are available for you also and can tell you more about our services.  Your Week of Welcome (WoW) Leader is another great resource. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions for more helpful information!
