Long-Distance Students Adjust to Colder Temperatures as Snow Starts

In Indiana you can always count on the weather getting very cold very fast. A lot of people from the South that attend Manchester University didn’t really understand that until the snow started coming down and realized the weather is way different then where they are from.

Michael Martin-Hinds, a first-year offensive lineman on the football team, came here from North Port, Florida. He is not a huge fan of the cold weather so far. “All my friends and family back home told me that it gets cold up here in Indiana, and I didn’t really believe them,” he said. “I would do anything to be back home in the heat right now, where it’s 76 degrees. This snow is cool, but I am not a big fan of it.”

Dylan Silverman, a sophomore quarterback for the football team also calls Florida home. He is not a huge fan of the midwestern winters as well. “The cold is fun at the start, but I wish it just lasted for like two weeks instead of being like three months long,” he said. “I would do anything to be at the beach right now, and be in the sand.”

Another Florida native is Trevor O’Brien, a first-year quarterback who agrees with his teammates. “I thought I would like the cold, because I always said that it was too hot in Florida for me,” he said. “But now I am here and I am living in this, I decided that I would much rather be in the warm.

“The winter hasn’t even hit all the way yet and I know it’s only going to get worse,” he continued. “I don’t know how people live in this weather for their whole life; I could not do it.”

Jacob Pils, a first-year offensive lineman, who also hails from Florida, anticipated liking the colder weather. “I thought this since I am a bigger guy and I didn’t really think it would affect me that bad,” he said. “But that is definitely not true. It’s so cold outside it kind of makes it hard to even function. I get outside, and just think about how warm my bed would be right now.

“I don’t understand how people can even be productive in this weather,” he continued. "All it makes me want to do is lay in bed and watch movies and drink hot chocolate. I finally realized that I do love the weather where I am from, so I guess I did learn something about myself coming here.”
