Community Connections

“I went on a lot of college visits,” says pre-pharmacy major Nick Buttermore. But something special drew him back to Manchester. “Everyone seemed very genuine and real,” says Nick, “and that was really awesome to experience.”

Community and relationships are important to Nick, so he chose a people-oriented career – pharmacy. “I wanted to be in something that would allow me to bring about change and help people.” The idea of getting an inside track to Manchester’s Doctor of Pharmacy Program also drew him in.

Advice for Students Looking at MU

Don’t worry if you find yourself unsure about a definitive major or future profession to work toward. The professors here aren’t just here to teach specific classes, but they are filled with knowledge and advice for finding what you are passionate about. As you learn more, you’ll learn more of what excites you.

“I knew it would be a great learning experience, but it really became so much more.”

Rich Experiences
Nick participated in Medical Practicum – a three-week January course in which students assist a team of medical professionals in remote villages of Guatemala, where quality health care is in short supply. For students majoring in the pre-health sciences, the experience can be life-changing. For Nick, the disparity between access to health care in these remote villages and the United States left a lasting impression. “I knew it would be a great learning experience, but it really became so much more,” Nick says. After pharmacy school, Nick thinks he’ll stay in the area. “I think you make great connections with people and it's important to maintain those connections.”
