Three Oak Leaves journalists won awards in the annual Indiana Collegiate Press Association contest for work produced in 2022.

The student newspaper at Manchester University received one first-place and two third-place awards.

Madison Cunningham won first place in the Opinion Column category with “Put Down the Digital Pacifier, MU.”

A judge wrote, “A breezily written call for students to depend less on their cell phones and notice what is around them. Bravo for including some reporting in the opinion to make your argument.”

From Lowell, Indiana, Cunningham is majoring in English/language arts education and is minoring in Spanish.

Tristen Bronaugh won third place in the Entertainment Story category for “Sophomore Writes, Produces Play ‘The Closing Shift.’

A judge said, “Bronaugh’s profile is focused, concise, and informative. The writing presents not only the play’s production but also the student writer behind it. The writing clearly understands the importance of presenting a personal connection.”

From Crawfordsville, Indiana, Bronaugh is majoring in digital media arts.

Chloe Leckrone, who graduated from MU in 2022, won third place in the News Story category for “Out of State Suspects Arrested Near Campus over Winter Break.”

A judge said the story focused on “human experiences in a newsworthy moment that, while it could easily have been missed, disrupted life on campus.”

Leckrone, a North Manchester resident, now works for the University as the communications specialist in the Office of Strategic Communications.

The Oak Leaves' faculty advisor is Professor Katharine Ings.
