Overview

The world runs on data, and the demand for trained professionals with a degree in data science has never been higher. Data science is an interdisciplinary field of methods, processes and systems used to extract knowledge from data.  Data science employs techniques drawn from many areas of mathematics, statistics and computer science and operates in the intersection of statistics, algorithms, software engineering and communication.

The fast-growing field of data science has applications in nearly every area of society, commerce and academia, and careers in data science include health care, insurance, finance and marketing. Employment demand is expected to increase at least 25 to 30 percent over the coming decade, with salaries in our region ranging from $42,000 to $169,000 (median $94,000). There are currently over 300,000 jobs available nationwide in data science and related fields [indeed.com]. 

Terms such as informatics, data analytics, data mining and business intelligence are often used interchangeably with data science. However, data science, as an academic discipline, provides a formal methodology upon which to build and implement specialized applications in a wide variety of fields. 

The ideal data science student is goal oriented and creative, enjoys solving challenging problems, and has sufficient quantitative skills to place into Calculus I.

  • Develop a broad experience in modeling, computing, data management and applications that will make you competitive in entering the job market.
  • Gain skills handling data from a variety of sources and apply techniques for cleaning, transforming, and structuring data for analysis.
  • Employ algorithmic problem-solving skills, including: defining requirements, decomposing problems, selecting appropriate solution strategies and developing actionable results by means of computer applications, programming and modeling.
  • Learn to build and assess statistical and machine learning models, employ a variety of formal inference procedures, and draw appropriate conclusions. 
  • And critically, acquire skills in data visualization and communication of quantitative information to both the public and organizational stakeholders.

Manchester’s interdisciplinary approach to education and integration of math and computer science within the same department create synergies that enhance your ability to make critical connections. 

Through its own industry advisory group, Manchester has formed regional connections and developed internship opportunities throughout northeastern Indiana, collaborating with companies in the bio-tech, health care, finance and transportation industries. 

Students with a knack for numbers who pursue a major in diverse areas such as psychology, business, communications studies and political science can minor in data science and learn to apply quantitative and computational methods to their field of study.   

Through Manchester’s liberal arts curriculum, you’ll be prepared to effectively communicate with a variety of audiences. The data science major features data-driven investigations in complementary disciplines, such as physical sciences, life sciences, social sciences, humanities and business. You’ll graduate not only with the technical skills required in the field, but with transferrable skills that will make you stand out with potential employers.
