Art by Syrian refugees is featured at Fort Wayne campus

Reception and panel are Jan. 23 at Manchester University

SistersAmal: When Hope Endures – Art as Therapy with Syrian Refugees – is on exhibit until March 21 at the Fort Wayne campus of Manchester University.

It is a collaborative exhibit of paintings created by children and adults on canvases salvaged from camp tents at Zaatari, a refugee camp in Jordan.

Amal – the Arabic word for hope – endures in the hearts of these artists. In the middle of struggle,
suffering and despair, these survivors use art to express their loss and hope for the future.

The exhibit is at 10627 Diebold Road. It is open to the public between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays when classes are in session. The campus is closed Dec. 22-Jan. 1. Admission is free.

A reception is 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, followed by a panel discussion at 6 p.m. on the topic of the civil war in Syria and using art as therapy with refugees.

The panel includes Dr. Ken Stewart of HearCare Audiology, who has traveled to Syrian refugee camps in Jordan. He will be joined by Maggie Conroy, director of marketing for Entheos, who put together the art show, and Hend Azhary, M.D., from the Syrian-American Medical Society.

This exhibit is made possible by Manchester University Galleries, HearCare Audiology, Hearing the Call Art Initiative and with support from Dr. Ahmed Abdelmageed, assistant dean of student, alumni and community engagement at Manchester.
