W. Thomas Smith named dean of Pharmacy Programs at Manchester

 

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Manchester University announces that Dr. W. Thomas Smith has been selected as the new dean of Pharmacy Programs in the College of Pharmacy, Natural and Health Sciences.

“I am overjoyed by the prospect of collaborating with our incredibly accomplished and industrious faculty to advance academic pharmacy and prepare the next generation of medication experts,” Smith said. “I also look forward to working more closely with our very talented students in the development of their professional identities. Personally, I am excited to build upon Manchester’s remarkable tradition of community service, particularly involving the care of vulnerable and underserved persons in Fort Wayne and the northeast Indiana region.”

In his role as dean, he oversees both the Doctor of Pharmacy and Master of Science in Pharmacogenomics programs that are based at the MU Fort Wayne campus.

“It is truly a great honor and privilege to be to be selected for this position. To date, it is the highlight of my career,” Smith said.

Smith previously served as pharmacy associate dean of assessment and administration. He worked with faculty, students and other stakeholders in implementing the assessment plan for the doctoral program, as well as teaching pharmacy law courses since joining Manchester in May 2015.

Smith is currently serving a three-year appointment on the Food and Drug Administration's Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee.
 
The Fort Wayne resident earned his Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) from St. Louis College of Pharmacy and his Juris Doctor Degree and certificate in health law from St. Louis University School of Law.  He is a member of the American Bar Association, the American Society for Pharmacy Law and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.

Smith has served as an author, speaker and leader in such areas as pharmacy law, cultural competency, health disparities, bioethics and disability law. 

His appointment was effective May 1, 2017.
