Graduation Information

The following information will help you know what to expect on your graduation day. There is no rehearsal for Commencement, so this information is important. If you have questions not answered here, please call the Office of Academic Affairs at ext. 5051.

Commencement

Graduates are expected to wear their cap, gown (and hood) upon arrival. Graduates will check in at the registration table in Cordier Auditorium lobby. Graduates will collect their diploma cover and copies of the commencement program. All graduates must enter the auditorium with their guests.

During the ceremony, men should remove caps only during the invocation and the singing of the University Song. Women may remove their caps with the men, but may also keep their caps on throughout the service.

Commencement Ceremony

Graduates will come to the platform with their diplomas row by row, and by degree.

All Candidates Please Note:

The first candidate to receive a degree should be standing on the top step (the stage) before his or her name is read and should move forward only if the name read is hers or his. If the candidate is not on the top step, Vice President Cook-Huffman cannot be sure whether the candidate is moving forward to walk across the stage or is moving up the steps to get into position. As soon as that candidate moves forward, the next candidate should take his or her place at the edge of the stage and others behind move up one step.

Graduates should sit upon returning to their seats after receiving their diplomas.
