Nursing

"As a nurse, you have the opportunity to heal the heart, mind, soul and body of our patients, their families and ourselves. They may forget your name, but they will never forget how you made them feel."  ~ Maya Angelou

Program Opportunities

Overview

Nurses are the driving force of health care in the acute care, community and global settings. They make decisions and provide valuable input that directly impact personal, community and global health, focusing on not only treating, but also preventing disease. The nursing model of health care combines the art of caring with science to bring a unique perspective to caring for people in their time of need. The foundation of the art of nursing is a strong understanding of both physical and social sciences, which enables nurses to plan and provide high level, compassionate care to diverse populations.

Nurses are in demand. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 7 percent growth in the nursing workforce by 2029 and, according to ProjectionsCentral.com, Indiana will experience approximately 4,600 annual openings between 2016 and 2026.

Program Highlights

  • The Mirro Center, adjacent to Manchester’s Fort Wayne campus, houses the University’s state-of-the art nursing lab. Students will practice basic and advanced nursing skills using high-tech nursing simulation manikins that can mimic human reaction to illness – including the ability to cry, sweat and bleed. This practice before entering a hospital or clinical setting builds student confidence and promotes better patient care.
  • Students will be engaged in high tech, AR/VR experiences when learning anatomy and physiology through Z-Space and virtual dissection with the Anatomage®, which allows students to examine a 3-D virtual cadaver. These experiences provide them with a strong foundation for pathophysiology and the principles of nursing care.
  • Service learning is an integral part of the program, giving students the opportunity to grow professionally, personally and civically through service-learning experiences.
