Santner family doubles the love

Apr 3, 2024

Glenn โ€™70 and Allyson Anglin โ€™71 Santner met in an oil painting class at Manchester in September 1969. While Allyson searched for a seat with the perfect angle, Glenn selected the seat next to Allyson, who he deemed the cutest girl in the room.ย Glenn-and-Allyson-Santner

After just a few classes, and with the Sadie Hawkins dance approaching, Allyson went up to Glenn and said, โ€œIโ€™m fighting with my boyfriend right now and wonder if youโ€™d like to go out with me.โ€ Without hesitation, Glenn accepted. Two years later, they were married.

Allysonโ€™s favorite memories from her time as a student at Manchester include traveling down the Usumacinta River during a January Session course to Central America. She still owns a DVD with footage from the trip that was converted from Super 8 film.

Glenn fondly remembers a philosophy class during which Dr. Timothy Rieman asked everyone to respond to the question: โ€œWhat do you want to be?โ€ After every student had shared their professional aspirations, Dr. Rieman calmly noted that none of them had answered his question. He then said, โ€œI didnโ€™t ask you what you wanted to do. Now, letโ€™s try again; what do you want to be?โ€

Their Manchester experience not only earned the couple degrees and life-long friends, but also committed them to social justice. โ€œFeeding the hungry, welcoming the stranger, living peacefully, and tending to the stewardship of the earth are the legacy,โ€ they said.

Aaron-and-Isabel-SantnerNearly three decades later, Glenn and Allysonโ€™s son, Aaron Santner โ€™98, met his wife, Isabel Porrata-Doria โ€™98 Santner, at Manchester.

These two pairs of Manchester Mates are giving back to the University by doubling their efforts for MU Giving Day on April 17. They are part of a group of alumni challenging other couples who met at Manchester to give, and those gifts will be matched up to $17,000. Learn more here.

โ€œWe regard education as the most important issue in society, positively affecting decision-making across all other issues,โ€ said Glenn and Allyson. โ€œFinancially supporting our alma mater, therefore, joins social responsibly as a priority.โ€
