Manchester University hosts more than 100 youth for NxtGen Leadership Camp
Manchester University hosted 105 campers from 26 Indiana high schools for its third-annual NxtGen Leadership Camp from July 6-10. The NxtGen Program on Campus is a Lilly Endowment-funded initiative designed to help Indiana colleges and universities in their efforts to create new or expand and enhance existing high-quality, on-campus programs for community youth. The program aims to increase opportunities for Indiana youth to participate in learning experiences on college campuses that expose them to Indiana’s higher education institutions, while also providing them with experiences that will help prepare them for success in college and beyond. The camp is hosted at no cost to campers, and a $250 stipend is provided to every participant at the end of the week to ease the financial burdens of the students and their families. Camp highlights this year included academic exploration at both campuses, team building, college preparation and experience, leadership development, and a trip to Camp Mack. In addition to participating in academic and leadership sessions, campers also completed a service project for Humane Fort Wayne, bagging and delivering more than 1,000 pounds of dog food. Manchester University to host Regional Student Environmental Conference
Manchester University will host the inaugural Regional Student Environmental Conference on Monday, Sept. 28, organized by Earth Charter Indiana and Manchester’s Center for Environmental Resilience and Social Engagement. This event will connect youth and local experts for environmental education, stewardship, and action. The conference will begin at 9 a.m. with a welcome session, followed by morning sessions led by high school and college students who will share success stories about implementing environmental initiatives in their communities. The day will continue with a plenary session by entomologists and educators Kristie Reddick and Jess Honaker, also known as, “The Bug Chicks.” This event, as part of Manchester University’s Values, Ideas and the Arts (VIA) series, is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided for all attendees thanks to generous sponsors. In the evening, The Bug Chicks will host a professional development workshop for educators. The afternoon will have sessions focused on taking action, led by local experts and organizations. This event welcomes all high school and college students, as well as educators. Manchester University appoints Julie Knuth chief of staff
Manchester University has appointed Julie Knuth chief of staff to the president. She previously held the role of director of presidential and board operations. Knuth, a 2001 Manchester graduate, holds a bachelor’s degree in nonprofit business management. She has served the University for 15 years through three different presidential administrations. In this expanded role, Knuth will oversee institutional research and all grant work for the University. She will continue to serve as assistant secretary and liaison to the Board of Trustees and support the Executive and Governance Trusteeship Committees. She remains the Title IX appeals administrator. Knuth is Manchester’s lead contact for the Manchester Together initiatives, which include College Row housing, campus facility upgrades, Eel River Commons, and the Manchester Mile. These projects are funded by Lilly Endowment Inc.’s College and Community Collaboration grant. “Few individuals understand Manchester University as deeply as Julie Knuth,” said President Stacy H. Young. “Throughout her years of service and under three presidential administrations, she has consistently demonstrated unwavering commitment, sound judgment, and a remarkable ability to navigate complex challenges with professionalism and grace. Manchester University invites prospective students to visit for Private College Week
Private College Week, established by Independent Colleges of Indiana, offers students and families the opportunity to experience private, nonprofit colleges and universities through free tours and information sessions. From July 20-24, Manchester University will offer two visits each day. Wednesday, July 22 is 21st Century Scholars Day, specially designed to help students who are 21st Century Scholars complete activities in their Scholar Success Program. In addition to the campus tour and admissions information session, there will be a 30-minute session about the 21st Century Scholarship program. For rising high school seniors, a $500 per year Visit Incentive and an extra $500 per year Experience Award will be provided if they choose to attend Manchester. Manchester Symphony Orchestra announces 88th season
The Manchester Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is prepping for its 88th season. “I am thrilled about this music!” said Conductor and Artistic Director Debra Lynn. “Mark your calendar now because you don’t want to miss a note. This year, we’ve made a special effort to balance our repertoire more evenly between new, diverse works and familiar, beloved symphonic standards.” The season begins with A New World concert on Oct. 4 at Manchester University’s Cordier Auditorium, featuring the “New World Symphony” by Antonín Dvořák, “A Place in the Sun” suite by Franz Waxman, “American Salute” by Morton Gould and based on “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” by Patrick Gilmore, and Aaron Copland’s rousing “Hoedown from Rodeo.” “A Place in the Sun” showcases Scott Humphries on saxophone. Tish Kalita selected for Institutional Leadership for Vocation Seminar
Tish Kalita, executive director of experiential learning and external relations at Manchester University, was selected to participate in the inaugural Institutional Leadership for Vocation Seminar through the Council of Independent Colleges’ (CIC) Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (NetVUE). CIC selected 16 individuals through a competitive nomination process to participate in the inaugural 2026 summer seminar on Institutional Leadership for Vocation. The seminar brings together a group of emerging institutional leaders who explore how vocational exploration and discernment can play a greater role across campus, particularly in the work these leaders do with members of the faculty and staff, but also in curricular and co-curricular programming for students. Participants in the seminar gathered from June 15–19 in Louisville, Ky. Participants had the opportunity to reflect on their vocational path into leadership and how that informs the way they continue to lead. They explored how to make the case for vocational exploration and discernment across their campus, and ways that vocation can be integrated across student-facing programming. The seminar was led by Remylin Bruder, provost, vice president of academic affairs, and professor of nursing at Rochester Christian University, and Kurt Schackmuth, vice president for student life and chief mission officer at Lewis University. MU runner Gavin Byerly named HCAC 2025-26 Male Athlete of the Year
Manchester University senior Gavin Byerly, of Huntington, Ind., has been named the 2025-26 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference’s (HCAC) Male Athlete of the Year. The HCAC consists of 10 universities that compete in a conference championship at the end of each sport season. Byerly competed in cross country and both indoor and outdoor track and field his senior year at Manchester, breaking school records, receiving prestigious awards and dominating talented race fields. Byerly’s year-long reign started in Fall 2025 in the cross-country season, winning the HCAC Championship and earning MVP honors among all other athletes in the HCAC. Byerly then competed in the Great Lakes Regional meet, earning the Great Lakes Region Athlete of the Year, marking the first time in Manchester University history that a runner has received this award. Byerly continued to the national stage, competing among the best Division III runners in the nation at Spartanburg, S.C. Byerly earned First Team All-American, placing 39th in a field of 291 runners. Byerly carried his momentum to the winter season, winning the 800-meter run, 1 mile run and 3000-meter run at the HCAC Indoor Championship. My Manchester Story – Chris Rohr, Class of 2027
My Manchester journey began when I was born in 2005, with my father being a recent graduate and my mother working in admissions. My first day out of the hospital saw me in the old admissions building. As I grew up in and around North Manchester, I was adamant that I needed to go out of state for college, having frequented the same streets, restaurants, and people for the past 18 years. However, after my freshman year at North Central College in Illinois, I decided that Manchester was a better fit for my personal and academic needs, ultimately deciding to enroll in a last-minute trip to London in January 2025. I entered my sophomore year at Manchester with uncertainty in my area of studies, switching from my original marketing degree to environmental science and eventually biology. The classes I took were interesting, but there was an academic itch that I wasn’t able to scratch. An anxious aura surrounded me as I prepared to travel to London for my first January course: The Development of Scientific Thought. In London I was exposed to superb education through primary sources and first-hand experiences under the direction of our supervisors Dr. Greg Clark and Dr. Steve Naragon.
