MU offers professional development workshop with author Shannon Anderson
Manchester University’s Henney Department of Education will offer an interactive professional development workshop with award-winning local author Shannon Baunach Anderson on Saturday, Sept. 6. Based on her latest book, Writing from Scratch, Anderson will provide practical, skill-based writing “recipes” to educators, including creative ways to boost idea generation and methods of encouragement to help students develop as confident, joyful writers. This workshop is open to educators of all types and offers ideas that can immediately be applied in the classroom. Anderson, an Indiana native, is an award-winning children’s book author, professor and TEDx speaker. Her book I Love Strawberries! was named the top-rated 2022 picture book by Good Housekeeping magazine and the National Book of the Year by the Farm Bureau Foundation. Learn more here. The Manchester Fund reaches goal of $1.6 million
The Manchester Fund, Manchester University’s general fund for a wide variety of campus and student needs, has collected a record high of $1.6 million in the last year. The Manchester Fund ensures that the University can focus on teaching and learning while also handling the day-to-day realities of operating two busy locations. It covers urgent needs including laboratory equipment, student activities, technology upgrades, subscriptions, campus maintenance, travel expenses, and much more. In the past, The Manchester Fund has averaged $1.08 million annually. From July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025, a total of $1,631,268.75 million was donated to the fund by 1,226 donors, making it the largest amount raised in the University’s history. This achievement was made possible by the efforts of Janeen Kooi, former director of The Manchester Fund, who served MU for nearly 20 years and retired on June 30, 2025. Manchester University announces lineup for fall speaker series
Manchester University offers more than a dozen presentations in its Values, Ideas and the Arts (VIA) series for Fall 2025. Presentations are at 11 a.m. on Mondays in Wine Recital Hall at the North Manchester campus unless otherwise noted. They are free and open to the public. Sept. 1: Aaron Cook, a 2009 graduate and medical editor, shares a personal and intellectual journey about navigating the challenges of college and starting a career. Sept. 8: Brian Cashdollar, director of cross country and track & field at MU, discusses his coaching philosophy, which has demonstrated remarkable success by setting achievable expectations with his athletes, with applications to the larger campus community. Sept. 15: A discussion of the state of American democracy in celebration of Constitution Day, sponsored by Manchester’s political science program. Sept. 22: Markus Gilliar, an internationally renowned sports photographer, shares insights from four decades behind the lens at Olympic Games, FIFA World Cups, US Open and Wimbledon, Formula 1 races, the Tour de France, and more. Sept. 29: Irene Miller, social psychologist and Holocaust survivor, tells her story of survival as a child during World War II. Held in Cordier Auditorium. Oct. 6: Ella Brown, researcher at the University of Michigan, shares the results of her NSF-funded research with wild male mountain gorillas. Applied bachelor’s degree programs are purpose-built academic pathways designed with a clear end goal in mind. Rather than requiring the traditional 120 credit hours, these programs streamline coursework to focus on: graduate school prerequisites, professional credential preparation, and career-specific competencies.
North Harrison senior wins full-ride Honors Scholarship to Manchester
Vicki Moorman, a senior at North Harrison High School in Ramsey, Ind., is this year’s recipient of Manchester University’s Honors Scholarship. Initiated in 2021, the scholarship covers tuition, fees, on-campus housing and meal plan expenses for up to four years. Only one is awarded per year.

Manchester University names Gary Beck Staff Member of the Year
Gary Beck, mechanical controls technician, has been named the 2024 Christopher W. Garber Staff Member of the Year at Manchester University. The award is named in honor of Chris Garber, who was Manchester’s assistant vice president for operations at the time of his death in 2015, and recognizes an employee who demonstrates steadfast commitment to Manchester University and is a leader and collaborator who keeps the best interests of the University at heart.
