Research – Start early!
- Talk with professors, graduate students or CPD staff
- Meet with people working in that industry or field
- Identify prospective schools and seek information on their programs. Check out Peterson’s Guide to Graduate and Professional Schools
- Note all application requirements and deadlines
- Participate in graduate school events and visits



Selecting an Institution and Program
Consider the following as you search for the graduate program that is right for you:
- Program:Â Each school has a different curriculum and philosophy. Make sure they meet your educational goals.
- Faculty:Â Research the reputation and areas of specialization for the faculty
- Departments & Facilities: Certain institutions are known for their programs. Also consider the facilities they provide – do they meet your industry’s needs?
- Size: There are advantages and disadvantages to both large and small institutions.
- Placement: Where do graduates go?
- Degree Requirements: Make a list of all requirements such as residency, examinations, languages, candidacy, thesis or dissertation
- Application Process: What documents and/or exams are needed? Is there a GPA requirement or average
Applying and Preparation

Application Checklist
- Aim for the appropriate GPA – typically 3.0 or higher
- Choose 2-3 individuals and request letters of recommendation. At least one reference should be a professor
- Draft a statement of purpose. Have it reviewed by CPD and the Writing Center
- Sign up and take admissions test. Look for CPD emails regarding free practice exams
- Request transcripts
- Apply – read all instructions carefully, follow directions and meet deadlines
Finance your Education
- Browse and research fellowships, loans, assistantships, grants, and work-study options. Many require a separate application process.
- Remember to fill out of the FAFSA.
