Philosophy and Religious Studies - Pre-Ministry

If you’re anticipating a career in ministry, your Manchester University major in philosophy and religious studies can be tailored to prepare you for graduate school or seminary. Our pre-ministry program echoes the main emphases of the philosophy and religion studies major, including the use of numerous methods of inquiry to gain a sympathetic view of the texts, beliefs, doctrines, practices, and worldviews of the world’s religions. Your course of study may include an internship in ministry, tutorials in Greek and Hebrew, and individualized courses based on your own interests.

Program Highlights

  • Classes are typically small, guaranteeing close interaction and collaboration with faculty.
  • Students complete large research and writing projects that are often presented at the Manchester Research Symposium and other undergraduate research conferences.
  • Acceptance rates for students applying to graduate school are quite high.
  • North Manchester’s proximity to Fort Wayne and Chicago provides opportunities for intercultural and inter-religious experiences.

A Distinctive Experience

Pre-ministry students can get practical experience participating in Manchester’s diverse religious community at various levels. Students serve as ministry assistants, and as members of the Campus Interfaith Board and the Religious Life Committee. They also can participate in and help lead weekly ecumenical services in Petersime Chapel. There’s also Praise Jam on Wednesday nights and a variety of discussion groups that explore contemporary issues of faith.
