Posted Feb. 7 - An essay by Leonard Williams, dean of the College of Education and Social Sciences and professor of political science, has been published as a contribution to an e-book by Public Seminar Books. “On Trump’s Response to Charlottesville: Political Encounters and Ideological Evasions” has been reprinted in #Charlottesville: Before and Beyond, edited by Christopher Howard-Woods, Colin Laidley, and Maryam Omidi. Posted Feb. 1 - Whitney Caudill, vice president for human resources and strategic initiatives, was appointed to the board of directors of the Fort Wayne Zoological Society, which operates the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo. “Serving the community where I live is an important commitment of mine – it is part of how I am growing roots in northeast Indiana,” says Whitney. “To be able to do that with an organization, like the zoo, that’s focused on engaging children and strengthening families is a gift and privilege.”

Whitney also serves on the board of the YWCA of Northeast Indiana, is vice chair of the board of The Embassy Theatre, and serves on the Canterbury School Community Advisory Board. 

Posted Jan. 25 - Mohamed Amin, assistant professor of pharmaceutical sciences and pharmacogenomics, will present at the 6th Diabetes and Ramadan (DAR) International Alliance Conference in Dubai on Feb. 3. The title of his presentation is “A Tool for Communicating with Muslim Patients Considering Fasting during Ramadan.” Amin collaborated on the work with Ahmed Abdelmageed, assistant dean of experiential education and community engagement.

Posted Jan. 17 - Manchester University pharmacy student Riley Worl won the Charleston Half Marathon on Jan. 13. He covered the 13.1-mile course in 1:13:46.82, finishing 1 minute, 32 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. The field featured more than 2,400 runners. Read more.

Posted Jan. 10 - An article written by third-year pharmacy student Sara Shahdoost Moghadam is featured in the latest edition of the University Points of Contact newsletterpublished by the United States Public Health Service. In “Discovering Pharmaceutical Care in Native Communities,” Sara writes about her experience working with the Bemidji and the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, both in Minnesota. Her externships, she says, improved her clinical knowledge and cultural sensitivity.

Posted April 4 - Junior Carly Kwiecien and Tim McKenna-Buchanan, assistant professor of communication studies, will present their paper, “’It’s necessary for others, but not for me’: Exploring Conceptions of Professionalism that Emerge in the Organizational Socialization of Pharmacy Students” at the Central States Communication Association (CSCA) conference in Milwaukee in April. Their research and paper are a result of a 2017 Faculty-Student Summer Research Grant and will be presented alongside scholars in the Organizational and Professional Communication Division of CSCA.

Also, senior Shianna Knoll will present on a panel titled “The Future of PR: Outstanding PR Undergraduates Who Will Make a Difference.” On the panel, Shianna will share her experiences as a public relations student at MU and discuss how she is being taught to make a difference in her community and the PR field.

Michelle Calka, associate professor of communication studies, will chair and respond to panels on “Mental Illness and Media” and “Engaging with Other, Virtual and Human, Over Media.”

McKenna-Buchanan has served as awards coordinator for the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Caucus and will present the awards at the conference. He also will serve on the Spotlight on Diversity panel to discuss the “Challenges and Solutions of the Introductory Communication Courses at Liberal Arts Colleges and Universities.” 

Posted Dec.18 -  Mike Martynowicz, assistant professor of education, successfully defended his dissertation on Dec. 15. The project was titled “Examining the Impact of a Motivational Manipulation on College Students’ Self-regulated Learning Strategies and Academic Performance.” He has earned a Ph.D. in educational psychology from Ball State University, and his cognate was in learning and human development. 

Posted Dec. 12 - Sidhartha D. Ray, Ph.D., professor of pharmaceutical sciences, chaired a session titled "Signal Transduction & Redox Signaling" at The Society for Redox Biology and Medicine's 24th Annual Meeting, which was Nov. 29-Dec. 2 in Baltimore, Md.

Posted Nov. 29 - Sidhartha Ray, professor of pharmaceutical sciences, will participate in a Pharmacology and Toxicology Research Seminar Dec. 6 at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Ray will speak on “Apoptosis, Necrosis, Apocrosis & Autophagy - Four Unique Strategies With a Common Mission.”

Posted Nov. 27 - Marwa Noureldin, assistant professor of pharmaceutical sciences, has passed her board certification as a geriatric pharmacist (BCGP), while Jason Isch, assistant professor of pharmacy practice, has passed his board certification in ambulatory care (BCACP).
