Posted Feb. 15 - On February 24-25, three health and physical education student teachers from the Department of Exercise Science and Athletic Training will attend a leadership conference with the Indiana Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.  Hunter Gaerte ’18, Paige Keller ’18, and Mark Osmialowski ’18 will travel to McCormick’s Creek State Park with Professor Kim Duchane to develop leadership skills working with the Council of Future Professionals. 

Posted Feb. 14 - Zach Dougal, associate professor of exercise science and athletic training, has been awarded a student research grant from Indiana State University to continue his dissertation research on “Athletic training preceptor perceptions of student integration into an immersive clinical education model.”

Posted Feb. 9 - Tiana Maclin, a Manchester University senior, is the debut winner of the Emerging Leader Award presented by the Young Leaders of Northeast Indiana. She has juggled multiple jobs while providing leadership in school clubs and organizations and being an active volunteer in the North Manchester community. Learn more. 

Posted Jan. 24 - Second-year pharmacy students Kalee Swanson and Kelvin Reynolds have won Undergraduate Diversity Initiatives national-level travel awards from the Society of Toxicology. They will be treated as VIPs at the national meeting March 12-16 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Maryland. These students also will present a poster on cancer pathology titled “Dietary Exposure to an Admixture of Polyphenolics Significantly Reduces Dimethylnitrosamine (dmn)-Induced Carcinogenic Changes in Mouse Lungs.”

Posted Jan. 17 - Haylee Parrish, a junior from Andrews, Ind., recently became the eighth MU student to receive the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad this spring. Haylee, who majors in English and Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL), will study Japanese language and culture at MU’s partner institution, Hokusei Gakuen University in Sapporo, Japan, from April to mid-July.

The highly competitive Gilman scholarship is awarded on the basis of a strong academic record, financial need, and a proposed service project. It is designed to help prepare students for success in the global economy.

Posted Dec. 22 - Mary Lahman, professor of communication studies, has been published in the Dec. 15, 2016, online edition of Health Communication. Lahman, who founded MU Puppies of Ability and Conviction, the University’s service dog program, contributed “By My Side: The University’s First Service Dogs.”

Posted Dec. 9 - A record number of MU students will perform at The Indiana Music Educators Association (IMEA) conference Jan. 11-14 at the Grand Wayne Center and Embassy Theatre in Fort Wayne. This year, the IMEA Intercollegiate Masterworks Ensemble will rehearse and perform Orff’s famous work Carmina Burana. They will be under the direction of Joshua Habermann, music director for the Santa Fe Desert Chorale and director of the Dallas Symphony Choir.

MU’s selectees are: Mykayla Neilson, alto; Angela Ebert, tenor or alto; MacKenzi Lowry, percussion; Michael Rueff, bass; Kenzie Hare, soprano; Jake Svay, tenor; Clayton Marcum, tenor; Emily Lynn, soprano; Hayley Cochran, alto; Matthew Grothouse, baritone; Sierra Lehman, soprano; and Tiffany Reith, alto.

Posted Nov. 15 - Michelle Calka, assistant professor of communication studies, presented a paper at the National Communication Association annual conference Nov. 10-13 in Philadelphia. Her research paper was titled, “Agenda Setting in U.S. and Cuban Media Coverage of President Obama’s Visit to Cuba.” Michelle also was the conference planner of the Women’s Caucus interest group and now becomes chair.

Posted Oct. 24 - Seth Mayer, assistant professor of philosophy, presented a paper at the Solidarity in Open Societies conference Oct. 18 and 19 at the Catholic Academy of Bavaria. His paper will be published in an edited volume that will include other selected papers from the conference.

Posted Oct. 20 - Mohamed Amin, assistant professor of pharmaceutical sciences, is the associate editor for international development on the editorial team for Research in Social and Administrative Pharmacy. Amin will help researchers doing work in Asia, Africa and South America. In addition to the editorial role, he will help researchers improve their work and papers for publication. Amin is passionate about pharmacy practice in the developing world and RSAP is the field’s top journal.
