Posted April 6 - Andy Rich, MU’s Isaac and Etta H. Oppenheim Professor of Mathematical Sciences, has been elected chair of the Indiana Section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).  He served this year as vice chair and, before that, five years as secretary.  Rich has been active in the Indiana MAA throughout his 25 years at Manchester.  He regularly takes students to the spring meeting to compete in the Indiana College Mathematics Contest.  MU will host the Indiana MAA’s 2017 fall meeting.

Posted April 6 - Sid Ray, professor of pharmaceutical science, chaired a podium session titled “Ozone and Inflammation” and co-chaired a symposium session, “Communicating Toxicology to The Public,” at the annual meeting of the international Society of Toxicology March 11-15, 2017, in Baltimore.

Posted March 29 - Erinn Brooks, assistant professor of sociology, has published an article in the March 16, 2017 Sociological Quarterly.  “Examining the Reach of Color Blindness: Ideological Flexibility, Frame Alignment, and Legitimacy among Racially Conservative and Extremist Organizations” was co-authored with Kim Ebert and Tyler Flockhart. Updated April 3 - Manchester senior Olivia Kalema has been selected to receive the Financial Executives International Award by the Fort Wayne chapter of FEI.

The award goes annually to an outstanding junior or senior. Kalema will be recognized April 24 at the FEI Student Recognition Night and April 25 at the College of Business Club Banquet. 

Kalema is an international student from Kampala, Uganda.              

Posted March 19 - MU communication studies faculty and one senior presented at the Central States Communication Association annual convention in Minneapolis, Minn., March 15-19.

Assistant Professor Michelle Calka was part of a preconference program, Creating Beer Culture, and a short course, Finding Time to Write: How to Plan, Facilitate, and Participate in an Academic Writing Retreat. She also chaired two panels.

Assistant Professor Tim McKenna-Buchanan and co-author Sara Baker received the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Book Chapter of the Year Award, “You Are On Your Own: Magnifying Co-Cultural LGB/TQ Microaggressions in the Workplace.” The chapter appears in Contemporary Studies of Sexuality & Communication: Theoretical and Applied Perspectives (Manning & Noland, Eds.; Kendall Hunt). Tim chaired three panels and presented two projects.

Jeremy Williams, a senior communication studies and psychology major, presented “The Importance of the Basic Communication Course in the First Year Experience: An Examination of the Relationship between Student Emotions, Classroom Connectedness, and Motivation to Learn.”  His project stemmed from a faculty-student summer research grant with McKenna-Buchanan. Jeremy also shared his project involving EMS workers and emotion.

Posted March 8 - The Manchester Symphony Orchestra and MU’s very own Maestro Scott Humphries as conductor are getting some well-deserved recognition. MSO is featured on the promotion for the popular children’s book Crumpet the Trumpet  and on the foreword to Henry Dehlinger’s The Mount, which made its world premiere with Metropolitan Opera soprano Danielle Talamantes on Oct. 23, 2016, at the MSO’s opening concert for its 78^th season.

Posted Feb. 27 - Mike Martynowicz, instructor of education at MU, presented for the College Board at the Midwestern Regional Forum Feb. 27 in Indianapolis.  His presentation was titled “Building High School-Higher Education Partnerships through AP.” At the forum, educators shared best practices for creating effective collaborations between higher education and high schools.

Posted Feb. 23 - Teresa DeLellis, Pharm.D., assistant professor of pharmacy practice, has passed her geriatric board certification exam. She is now a board certified geriatric pharmacist (BCGP). She joined the Manchester faculty in 2015.

Posted Feb. 22 - Kate Eisenbise Crell will present Feb. 24 at the 20^th Annual Fort Wayne Teaching Conference at Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne.

The title of Kate’s presentation is “Helping Students Overcome the Challenge of Reading Academic Texts: The Importance of Reading Notes.”

“This presentation will report my experiences and best practices for teaching students how to take reading notes in order to understand academic arguments and prepare for class,” she says. “I will explain how I recognized students’ need for such instruction, how I actually teach this skill, and the positive change that occurred as a result.”

Posted Feb. 22 - Three Environmental Studies majors recently presented scientific oral papers at the joint meeting of the American Fisheries Society from Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. The MU students were the only undergraduates presenting at the meeting.

Joshua Long presented on "Smallmouth bass spawn and total suspended solids in the Eel River near North Manchester, Ind." Alan Mock presented on "Black bass in the Eel River of north central Indiana: A population assessment."  Alan has been accepted into the graduate program at Grand Valley State University. Cassandra Root presented on "Low-head dam removal on the Eel River in northern Indiana:  An ecological assessment."
