Posted Oct. 17 - Diane Calinski, assistant professor of pharmaceutical sciences, is one of 64 people selected for the 2017 Leadership Fort Wayne (LFW) class. The signature adult class of Greater Fort Wayne Inc., LFW is an eight-month program that provides an in-depth view of the community and helps develop leadership skills to benefit the community and the workplace.  

 

Posted Oct. 13 - Embassy Theatre has announced its 2016-17 volunteer board, and Whitney Caudill is vice president. Caudill is the MU vice president for strategic initiatives and external relations. Caudill serves on several non-profit boards and committees in Allen County.

Posted Oct. 13 - MU library faculty colleagues Darla Haines, Rebecca Johnson, Jill Lichtsinn and Edita Sicken, co-authored a book chapter, “Mission possible: Strategic planning for small libraries” in an Association of Colleges and Research Libraries book, The Small and Rural Academic Library: Leveraging Resources and Overcoming Limitations. Published in August 2016, the title is now available at Funderburg Library.

Posted Oct. 5 - Scott DeVries, who teaches Spanish and Spanish-American literature in Manchester’s Department of Modern Languages, has had a second book released. Brill of Leiden, the Netherlands, has released Creature Discomfort: Fauna-criticism, Ethics and Representation of Animals in Spanish-American Fiction and Poetry. Devries’ first book, A History of Ecology and Environmentalism in Spanish-American Literature, was published by Bucknell University Press in 2013. DeVries’ second book documents the way in which certain texts from Spanish-American literature anticipate concerns from present debates in animal studies.

Fourth-year pharmacy students Sipan Keshishyan, Marina Rizkalla, Tuan Tran and Vlada Kovalevskaya will present their research at the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy annual meeting July 23-27 in Anaheim, Calif. Their work is titled “Nuclear and mitochondrial ultrastructural changes during acetaminophen and dimethylnitrosamine-induced liver injury.”

Posted Sept. 22 - Ahmed Abdelmageed, director of experiential learning for the MU Pharmacy Program, was a presenter at the Refugee Summit in Fort Wayne on Sept. 21. The event focused on health care for the region’s refugee and immigrant populations, raising awareness about access, health literacy, language support, dietary differences, cultural competencies and other issues.

The Fort Wayne Community Schools reports that more than 72 languages are spoken in Fort Wayne.

Posted Sept. 19 - Leonard Williams, dean of the College of Education and Social Sciences and professor of political science, presented a paper and chaired a panel at the Anarchist Studies Network conference Sept. 14-16 at the University of Loughborough in England. Williams’ paper “Reform” was part of a series of panels on concepts of anarchist theory and practice. Williams will include the papers in the series as part of a forthcoming book, Anarchism: A Conceptual Analysis, edited by Williams, Benjamin Franks and Nathan Jun. 

Posted Sept. 12 - Under the leadership of President Heather Schilling, the Indiana State Reading Association recently revived the Indiana Reading Journal, moving it to an online format. Schilling is associate professor of education at Manchester. Stacy Stetzel, assistant professor of education at MU, serves with Schilling on the ISRA executive board. See the journal.

Posted Sept. 5 - The Wall Street Journal will publish a crossword puzzle by Leonard Williams in its Saturday, Sept. 10 edition. Williams is dean of the College of Education and Social Sciences and professor of political science. Solvers will be able to access it online.  

Two sport management faculty members in the College of Business recently presented research at the North American Society for Sport Management in Orlando, Fla. Sun Kang, assistant professor, and Ryan Hedstrom, associate professor, co-presented “Using a Step-Wise Career Development Guide to Effectively Mentor Sport Management Undergraduate Students.” Kang also presented “An Exploration of Factors that Encourage and Discourage Sport Fans from Using Smartphones.”
